Thailand is rich in natural resources. Gems from its mines are easily recognizable around the world for their excellent quality. First-class pearls are mined from the crystal waters of the Andaman Sea. The impeccability of Thai gems, the polishing and cutting skills of Thai craftsmen are all reflected in the world-class quality of Thai jewelry, as proven by the quality certificates provided upon purchase.
The sophistication and nobility of pearls delight even those who are indifferent to precious stones. These are special treasures that are even born in a special way - they are not mined from the bowels of the earth.
You might think that pearls are distant relatives of diamonds. Yes, they are also great, but there is no more similarity - both in composition and in the method of formation. They are more like living organisms than stones - they are also born, live for about 150 years, and then fade away.
The birth of a pearl is akin to a small miracle, the embodiment of the boundless power and beauty of nature. And to be completely accurate, mollusks living in shells. In their shelter, they secrete a special substance that pearls are later formed from, which is a treasure for divers.
Not every shell is fraught with coveted stones: they are formed only if foreign particles get inside: small mollusks, grains of sand or air bubbles. Because of them, the tender oyster might be damaged. But nature seeks to protect it: a protective shell is created around foreign bodies - pearls.
On the particles that have fallen, one layer after another, the liquid secreted by the mollusk grows. Roughness and sharp corners are smoothed out, not having a chance to harm the mollusk.
The larger the "bead", the more time it takes for it to ripen. The substance from which it is formed is called mother-of-pearl - "the mother of pearls."
How are pearls formed in a shell?
Around the foreign particle, the first layer of aragonite is formed, which is covered with another hundred such layers. The void between the calcium carbonate crystals is filled with proteins, thanks to which the shell becomes especially strong.
Pearls are born in shells - sea and river. And these are different types of stones - each has its own composition and appearance. If you are lucky, you will find a shell with one (and no more) large pearl in the sea. If you pull a shell out of the sea, you can find a few stones in the shell, but already smaller.
The third type of pearl is artificial: people are now not just exploring the depths in search of pearls, they have studied the technology and learned how to grow it in greenhouse conditions.
What determines the look of pearls?
What will the pearl be in its shape, color and size? A lot of factors influence this.
- Small pearls live in rivers and other shallow bodies of water, and larger ones are at the bottom of the sea.
- If a mineral grows on the body of a mollusk and does not touch the inner walls of the shell, it looks like a ball as much as possible. Moreover, it can form on the sink and resemble a growth.
- The diameter of the smallest pearls reaches 0.2 - 0.25 cm, large ones - more than 0.8 cm.
- Rarely found, but there are still stones 1 cm wide.
- The most impressive purl can be seen in the Museum of London: its weight is 85 grams, and its girth is 4.5 cm.
Jewelry stores offer pearls with a variety of palettes - for example, white, pink, silver, blue, black and even burgundy.
